Federal Eco Foam Supplies Sustainable Sports Mats for the First Green Dojo

This month, the International Judo Federation (IJF) recognized Agglorex Lommel Dojo as its first “Green Dojo”, in Lommel, Belgium, as part of its new “Green Dojo” initiative started in November 2024. This initiative encourages judo leaders to integrate eco-friendly practices into their dojo designs to reduce the sport’s carbon footprint, promote environmental awareness and inspire people to take action against climate change.

How Federal Eco Foam's Sports Mats Contribute to a Sustainable Dojo Environment

Federal Eco Foam contributed to Agglorex Judo Club’s “Green Dojo” designation by providing high-quality tatamis, carpet underlay and acoustical wall pads, which are all made with recycled REACH-compliant polyurethane rebond foam. For 40+ years, even preceding the IJF's development of its tatami certification program, Federal Eco Foam has manufactured world-class sports products under the brand name Agglorex that are internationally renowned for their quality, safety and sustainability.

As the first IJF-certified tatami supplier, it’s only fitting we are at the forefront of the sustainability movement with this “Green Dojo” initiative.

To receive the “Green Dojo” recognition on a bronze, silver or gold level, judo dojo operators must submit evidence of their sustainable practices. These sustainable practices include:

• Renewable energy

• Sustainability education and community engagement

• Carbon offsetting

• Green building certifications

Jean-Jacques Melotte, the driving force at the Agglorex Judo Club, has been a longtime ambassador for Federal Eco Foam's martial arts mats. Jean-Jacques and Federal Eco Foam teamed up to bring Belgian bronze Olympian and world champion Matthias Casse to the dojo’s grand opening, where he tested out the performance and safety of the new tatamis. After practicing on the martial arts mats, he was extremely impressed with their forgiving nature, falling comfort and steady footing, ensuring optimal performance for judokas of all skill levels.

In October, Federal Eco Foam will launch its new sports mats line, which will ensure we further refine our mat finish and dimensions, with enhanced overall quality control throughout the entire production process. This new production line will also have an ecological focus, as we decided to convert our raw materials to reduce our carbon footprint.
